Manaslu Circuit + Tsum Valley, 19 days

I will be in Nepal for five+ months hiking the g.h.t., but before I get serious I need to do a hike to acclimatize/ acclimate into Nepal. Looking to do the three passes, manaslu, Kanchenjunga or Annapurna. Where it is required to use guides I will but I prefer independent trekking. I’ve done a bunch of long distance independent hiking in the past, and thus, feel confident hiking without a guide. I really would like to hike with others as its more fun. I’ve hiked a bunch but I’m not some turbo hiker. I like to enjoy it

**Update**
Two of us will hike the Manaslu Circuit on 18/19th of Dec. We plan to do the Tsum Valley side trip and end in Dharapani 19 days later. We then plan to carry on without guide to Jomson via the AC circuit trail. Anyone else want to join up let us know. Cheers, J.C.

  1. JC manaslu sounds interesting especially tsum valley side trip. It might be better than everest at that time of year due to lower elevation, a bit warmer etc. A little bit more organising but no flights needed. I get in on 17th but can start as soon as permits ready. Also looks like you need a guide. Andrew

  2. i recommend you take a porter with english from agency (blue permit) for good beginning take a Helambu trek which is cheap ,not very high and fine trails with lodges.
Khumbu ,Makalu-Barun , Dhaulagiri and “Kancha” are really hard . Those last three you need have your own camping gear and be good prepare (food, warm clothes) You shouldn`t get HAI on annapurna or manaslu trek

    cheers

  3. Plans have changed a little. Two of us will start hiking the manaslu circuit on 18/19th of dec. we plan to do the tsum side trip and end in dharapani 19 days later. We then plan to carry on without guide to Jomson via the AC circuit trail. Anyone else want to join up let us know. Cheers, J.C.

  4. Looks good! Sent you a message.

  5. Hey! I have some same sort of plans. How many of you are going now in this group?

  6. Hey Jani, I think it’s three of us for now. JC is on his way to Nepal as we speak and I’ll get there on the 14th.

  7. Ok, thanks Laura! I did send JC a message…

Jani – this is a reply from JC that he accidentally sent to my address:

jani, i wrote you a long note but the computer ate it. amyway i have no problem having you come with us. i just met with our guide and he said we should have manaslu to ourselves. so with that thought i just wrote andrew about possibly starting in langtang then on to the high camps of the ganesh himal then moving on to manaslu and tsum, essentially the ght from sundrigal to dharapani. i dont know if andrew can spend that long on the trail. he should get back to me shortly. the other option is to hike 30 days in manaslu, of which 11 days will be in tsum hiking passes up to tibet. the problem here is that wed have to carry tents and its really cold up there. im game but not sure about the others. if we stick to the origional plan wed hike with guide to dharaqpani then by ourselvves on to jomson via AC. (30-31 days). let me know what you think. the weather here in ktm is absolutely beautiful. j.c.

  9. I would say that everything you wrote sounds wonderful. My plan was that if we just do the Manaslu and Tsum in about 19 days, I would end it there in Dharapani since I just walked AC few months ago, and instead return and do the Langtang/Helambu -treks by myself then.
But if it would work out to do some of the stuff mentioned before, I would love it. Camping in passes sounds amazing, but thinking the time of the year it might be pretty damn cold, and also logistically it might be more difficult and expensive.
I’ll try to make it to Nepal some time next week.

If I could decide, I would go for the first option you mentioned: “…starting in langtang then on to the high camps of the ganesh himal then moving on to manaslu and tsum, essentially the ght from sundrigal to dharapani…”, but if that doesn’t work out, then just the Manaslu/Tsum as planned.

    Let’s keep in touch!

jani, we all decided to do the origional plan. i think it’s too cold and the others would have to buy more gear. im off tomorrow to pokhara for a four day hike. im stayting at the hotel silver home in thamel. i’ll probably be here when i get back on the 16th. we all need to meet up sometime on the 17th and get our permits with our guide siri. you will love this guy. i have an agent that will act as our “sponsor” for free. when we all meet up let’s think about spending a couple more days in tsum. hope alls well with you and look forward to hiking, j.c.

  11. Hey guys,

Getting really excited 🙂 Do you wanna start a group e-mail or something to keep in touch and make arrangements?

I’m a bit limited by my return ticket (Jan 17th i think it is) for adding in extra days, but I guess we can work all that out when we meet.

    Grtz,
    Laura
