Manaslu Circuit Trek

I’m a student in the UK and I’m going to be in Nepal over Christmas (8th – 29th December), hoping to do the Manaslu Circuit Trek. My plan is to only stay in teahouses and hire a guide, which is compulsory as it’s a restricted region.

More info about the trek is available here: https://trekkingnepalhimalaya.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/manaslu-circuit-trek-route-map/

I have a few treks before in the Ladakh and Tibet as well as mountain climbing in Europe.

If any keen trekkers are around at that time of year and interested in joining the trek then let me know.

  1. Hello James, I would be interested in joining you… I have done the 3 passes Everest trek twice and the Annapurna Round trek once.. I have also trekked and climbed in Ladakh and Pakistan and extensively in the alps.. check out my photography website http://www.tuinpics.de… Manaslu is great and Tsum is a must! As it will be almost December, there is no need to pay a fortune for a guide, as there will be fairly few trekkers… the guide is only necessary because of regulations… he really has no other function and is really dead weight…so it does not really matter who he is as long as he is legally registered and not too annoying..LOL… do you already have a guide in mind? Otherwise we could just find ourselves one in Gorkha or Arughat…. what do you think?

    • Hi,

That sounds great. I am already in contact with a guide directly who was recommended to me. Would you be free to do the dates that I suggested? (around 9th – 29th December)
If you want to Skype or talk more about it that would be great. When are you actually going to in Nepal?

I look forward to hearing from you.

      James

  2. hello James, thank you for your reply…the dates are fine.. should be enough for manaslu and side trip to tsum (highly recommended). you say you already got a guide.. what does he charge for those 20 days? Technically we only need him until we reach the Annapurna conservation area…. so could be a lot less than the 20 days… LP says the guide should be about 15USD per day… yeah. let s skype. .I am tuin94115 on skype.. talk there

    • The guide I have spoken to said it would cost more that that to get a properly licensed guide, about 30US$ a day including their food and lodging etc. He would also able to sort out all the permits for us.
Are you free to Skype this afternoon, in about 4 hours?
We may also have to talk about doing a slightly shorter trip (or walk faster) because those are the dates of my flights so I don’t want to cut it that close.

  3. Hi James,

My husband, Jonathan, and I are flying to Kathmandu on December 6 and planning to hike the Manaslu Circuit from the 9th onwards. We have extensive trekking experience from around the globe (Nepal, Alps, South Africa etc.).

We have been in touch with the visithimalayastrek website to enquire about the cost of a guide, permits etc. Is this the same company you’ve been in touch with? We were also quoted USD 30 per day for the guide – this seems a bit steep considering it’s low season…

We would possibly be interested in sharing a guide. I’ve also read a couple of trip reports where people didn’t take a guide and had no problems (e.g. guide gets ‘ill’ and has to return home) It would be great to meet up in Thamel to exchange info if you are interested?
Look forward to hearing from you!

    Sophie

  4. Hi James,
Thanks for your reply. I have spoken with Holger just now on Skype and we will aim to meet you at the trekking office on the 9th at 10 am.
    See you there!
    Sophie

    • Great, see you there!

      James

  5. Hi James (and the rest),

I’m a 27 years old Dutch guy, just graduated, having spontaneously decided to go to Nepal in december to do a trekking. I would love to do the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

I have some trekking experience (India, Europe etc.) and I was wondering if you guys still have a spot open 🙂 I’ll arrive in Katmandu the 8th of December.

The only problem is that I have to be back in Katmandu the 21th of December (I just got a two weeks). Possibly I could return earlier… But before doing more research, I was wondering If I could join 🙂

    Thx in advance. Ruben

    • Hi Ruben,

I’m afraid that the Manaslu trek is likely to take at least 17 days and it’s not really possible to cut it short…

If you’re able to spend longer trekking then you’re welcome to join us.

      Thanks,
      James

  6. Hi James,
We are in Kathmandu now, still aiming to meet you on the 9th – is this the earliest you can meet? Just wanted to clarify how many days you have in total for the trek (excluding travel)? What day is your flight back?
    Cheers,
    Sophie and Jonathan

    • Hi Sophie and Jonathan,

Yes, that’s the earliest I can meet as I don’t arrive in Kathmandu until 8am on the 9th.
My flight back is on the morning 29th. If we leave for Arught on the 10th then we will have about 16/17 days of trekking.

      Many thanks,
      James

    • Also if you want to trek for longer at the end it is possible to go further into the Annapurna region without a guide.

  7. Hi James,
Can you private message me? – we just had a couple of ideas we wanted to run past you.
    Thanks,
    Sophie & Jonathan
