Island Peak

Hi – I want to climb Island Peak in late December. I’m looking to fly to Lukla on 20/12 or so and start an Island Peak guided trip (starting at the island peak base camp) some time between 24/12 and 27/12, and fly out of Kathmandu on 4/1. I’m a good hiker, but have never done any technical mountaineering. I want to find a company that provides gear + some training on the mountain too. Mountain Monarch has this Island Peak only trip listed for $950 US (starts and ends at Chhukung – I’m sure it will be cheaper and more fun if there are a couple of us. Overall I think the trip will be around $1300-1750 US depending on the deals we can find. Does this interest anyone?

To give you an idea of the pace I am thinking to go at –
20/12 – Fly into Lukla, go all the way to Namche (long day, but low altitude)
21/12 – Phortse
22/12 – Dingboche
23/12 – Chhukung
24/12 or so – Start Island Peak. If the trip starts later, maybe hang out on top Chhukung Ri or dart over to Kala Pattar for acclimatization.

31/12 – Chhukung
1/1 – Pangboche
2/1 – Namche
3/1 – Lukla
4/1 – Fly out from Lukla

  1. Hi Daniel,

I like the look of your plan. I am flying in from New Zealand on the 15th of December and was thinking about doing some easy mountaineering but was unsure of what the winter conditions would be like.

I have done some easy mountaineering in NZ and the Andes. I’m a good hiker but have experienced altitude sickness a few times so would want to take it easy to get aclimitized.

Mountain Monarch look like a good organisation – have you talked to them about you intended dates?

    • Sorry I didn’t see your reply earlier. Instead of doing Island Peak, I ended up booking Chulu West (6,420m) on the Annapurna circuit – as the agent said the Lukla flights may not go due to fuel. The cost was $1155 USD for me – which just includes the climbing portion.

I fly into KTM on the 18th and head to the circuit on the morning of the 19th. I think it is possible to still join if you are still looking, so let me know.

  2. Hello,

We will be in Lukla on Dec 26th to do the EBC with as many of the 3 passes as possible. We are trekking there for 24 days before flying back to Kathamandou. It is a high-school graduation trip for my daughter. We are doing it without guides or porters.

Has you seen to be around there at the same time, here is my hotmail e-mail adress so we can connetc and possibly meet there?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Enjoy Nepal everyone.
