I am living in Kathmandu for 2 months, while my wife is volunteering with an NGO. During this time, I would like to do several treks such as, Langtang, Annapurna, etc. However, because it is still early in the season, I would like to start off with a short trek near Kathmandu. I am planning on doing Helambu Circuit (Sundarijal -> Thimbu) over 6 days. I will be roughly following the Lonely Planet Trekking Itinerary as outlined below:
Day 1: Taxi/Bus from KTM to Sundarijal in early morning -> hike to Chisopani
Day 2: Chisopani -> Golphu Bhanjyang
Day 3: Golphu Bhanjyang -> Tharepati
Day 4: Tharepati -> Melamchi Ghyang
Day 5: Melamchi Ghyang -> Tarke Ghyang
Day 6: Tarke Ghyang -> Thimbu, bus back to KTM
The hike should be relative easy, roughly 10-15km each day. Highest elevation is 3640m. It would be perfect for someone who is living in Kathmandu and is interested in a short trip. Price is an estimate, but it should be pretty cheap, only permits needed are Shivapuri NP (500 Rs) and TIMS.
I am in my 30’s and from California, USA. I am a moderately experienced hiker, but I would prefer to have one or more trekking partners for safety. As far as pace goes, I am in no rush at all! Slow pace, side trips, and extra nights, are totally fine with me, but I understand if some people are on a tight schedule.
