Classic EBC Trail – Jiri to EBC possibly via Gokyo and 3 passes and back to Lukla or Jiri

Hi, my names Dale, I’m a 30 year old engineer from Leeds, England. I’ve been travelling around Asia since last spring, and I’m now planning to hike to the Everest base camp from Jiri. I am hoping someone on here might be doing the same and want to split the cost of a guide. I’m not an athlete but I have been hiking British mountains regularly most of my life and crossed the Grand Canyon in three days last spring.

My plans are very much open and still being formed. If you’re considering flying into Lukla, instead join me at Jiri to hike the “classic” trail to EBC. Below is an itinerary I lifted from a post and edited slightly with options depending on conditions and tiredness. I would like to hike up to Namche then possibly do the 3 passes, EBC and Gokyo. The way back depends on how tired we are.

The shortest option would take 21 Days (Approx.) and the longest 30 days (Approx.)

Jiri – EBC Itinerary
1 Hike to Deurali or Bhandar if poss.
2 Kinja by Midday, Sete by night
3 Junbesi by night
4 Rest day, can visit Thubten Chholing largest monestry in Nepal
5 Ringmo by Midday, Manidingma (Nunthala) by eve
6 Bupsa by eve
7 Cheplung
8 Namche Bazaar
9 Rest day
10 Tengpoche monastery, Deboche by Eve
11 Dingboche
12 Rest Day
13 Lobuche
14 Rest Day
15 Gorak Shep, day trip to Kala Pattar for Everest view
16 Hike to EBC, then back down to…..

Option A (tired):
….Pheriche
17 Namche Bazaar
18 Lukla
19 Fly back to Kathmandu OR…
25 hike back to Jiri (approx 7 Days)

Option B (scenic route):
…Dzonglha
17 Tagnag
18 Gokyo
19 Rest Day – side trips to Gokyo Ri and scoundrels viewpoint
Option B1 (tired or bad weather):
20 Phortse
21 Namche
22 Lukla Airport OR…
29 Jiri 7 day hike
Option B2 (good weather):
20 Lungden or Marulung (tough 10 hour hike, weather depending)
21 Thame
22 Namche
23 Lukla Airport OR
30 Jiri 7 day hike

    Hey Dale
    Oh how I wish I had 21 days to walk the same EBC route, from Jiri (as did Sir Edmund Hillary), and to just spend more time in general trekking in Nepal.
    Let me know how it all goes.
    If professional commitments lay off, and more free days fly my way, I’ll let you know. Otherwise, I have two weeks, and am trying to squeeze Gokyo Lakes in there, also.

    Hi Dale,
    I also want to do the 3 passes trek and am looking for someone to hike with. Is your starting date definite? I would like to start a little earlier if possible but am having a hard time finding a hiking partner….

    Hi Dale, I’m in KTM now on the 17th and have been planning to start at Jiri on roughly the 21st. I’ve trekked alone before and don’t know about trying to match up a whole trek with someone else, but I know I wouldn’t mind company on the 6am bus to Jiri! Reviews of that can make it seem pretty severe and it’s making me doubt my plans to walk-in. It might be good to share the whole walk-in route too, not sure. As far as the whole trek, I’ve got about 21 days.
